There’s an old lady with a blue floral print bonnet I see only on Tuesdays. She always carries a newspaper, but two weeks ago she started bringing a paperbag too. Normally she leaves at 5th Street, one stop before mine. One night curiosity made me follow. She walked past rows of suburban houses, then stopped at a bright yellow one, sitting on the grass. Her face looked unbearably sad. “Hi,” I said. She spoke of memories, her husband gone. When she left, she tossed the bag in the trash. After she vanished, I looked inside: A gun.
