Homework: Take a character, and from that character's point of view, describe their reaction to something horrific and awful, but do so without describing the thing itself.


No.

No, that wasn’t real. It couldn’t be real.

My eyes darted to the door. Still closed. It hadn’t been opened. I am still in this room alone.

I am alone.

Ignoring the tightness forming in my chest, I took a slow, deep breath and returned my eyes to the pages of my book.

I did not read. My eyes stared, but my mind refused to see a single word. Every sense was screaming to stay alert, straining to perceive something impossible. 

Something beyond the silence.
